EVERY BODY LOVES SOME BODY: LOVE THE ONE YOU’RE IN

How do you feel about your own body?

When you were very little, you probably grabbed at your toes and tried to put one of them in your mouth. People cooed over how adorable you were. You didn’t have a problem with body image, back then.

But that was then. Now, you’re more likely to look in the mirror with a frown of dissatisfaction, not approval. It’s time to change the message you’re telling yourself. Because the truth is, your body is a marvelous creation:

When you get sick, what heals you is your body’s own immune system.

•   You get a cut, put a band-aid over it, and your body heals itself.

•   You catch a cold, a virus, say, get rest and fluids, and your body gets better.

•   You accidentally swallow poison — suddenly you vomit, run a fever or experience diarrhea, as your body expels the poison.

Your body works to keep you healthy.

It’s perfectly designed for optimal function, depending on what you ingest, swallow, breathe in, brush up against or inject into it.

Every body is unique in some way. We’re affected by toxins in our food and our environment, and by genetic tendencies, gene variants, provided by your ancestors. Call it the “friends and family plan,” because you’re also affected by people you interact with on a regular basis.

There are several factors, some “what-ifs” that support a healthy immune system:

1) if your ancestors ate good food, avoided toxins or poisons, had strong social networks and were somewhat active, you might end up with some fairly healthy DNA

2) If you’re knowledgeably eating healthy foods — certified GMO free, organic, homegrown, fermented food, lots of leafy greens, no processed foods — if you know exactly what your body needs to get healthy and you give those specific foods to your body, your immune system has what it needs to keep you healthy.

3) If you practice some basic common sense, and listen to good advice from experts you trust:

•   Dr. Charlotte Gerson always says, “if it comes with a list of ingredients, especially some you can’t even pronounce, don’t eat it.”

•   Dr. John Bergman points out, “When you eat processed foods, you’re trusting someone else with your health. If someone else prepares it, don’t eat it.”

•   Dr. Mark Hyman and Dr. William Li agree “Food is better than medication at treating disease.”

If you have a serious disease, like cancer, you go to your favorite health practitioner. Sometimes they can help you, sometimes they can’t. A few doctors are slowly waking up to the fact that the human immune system is in big trouble.  Most know less than you do about how your immune system works. They were, most of them, trained in disease management, as taught by pharmaceutically funded medical schools. But the human body was created, thousands of years ago, to run on food, not pharmaceuticals.  And even the best, safest, most-tested pharmaceuticals in the world are designed to work with a perfectly functioning immune system.

Life-saving vaccines, for example, are designed to spark an antibody response. But that only happens when your immune system is strong and healthy enough to respond.

But what if yours isn’t? Your body will do what it can, to protect you. But it won’t be enough.  Man-made products, designed to work with a perfectly functioning immune system, will be injected, ingested, applied or inhaled. They may help you. They may make things worse. But in most cases, that won’t be enough either.

Your body is surrounded by challenges from every side. What’s the solution? Find out exactly what your body needs, and provide it. Have your genes tested to discover what variants you have and how to address them. Find a functional medicine practitioner or a naturopath who looks at the whole body. Not all do.

Listen to your body

Be thoughtful about what you put into it and what you expose it to. If you’ve been living too much in your head, it’s time to get to know your body again.

But what if you and your body have lost touch with each other? What if you’re no longer speaking the same language? You need help, to get back on course.
